5 beaches to explore during New Zealand's summer
Dive into golden beaches, crystal-clear waters, and endless sunshine. From surfing and paddleboarding to beach picnics and coastal strolls, summer in New Zealand is all about seaside bliss.
Pack your sunnies, embrace the ocean breeze, and make unforgettable memories by the shore. See below a list of some of our favourite beaches.
1. Cape Reinga, Northland
Embark on a journey to Cape Reinga, New Zealand’s northernmost point, where the Tasman Sea collides with the vast Pacific Ocean. Feel the excitement of driving along Ninety Mile Beach and watch for the wild horses that roam this stunning coastline. Immerse yourself in the region’s rich Māori culture and traditions, and discover the spiritual significance of Te Rerenga Wairua (Cape Reinga) on this unforgettable full-day adventure.
Included as an Optional activity on all tours visiting the Bay of Islands.
2. Abel Tasman National Park, South Island

Walk along the golden sand beaches and cruise the sheltered coves of the Abel Tasman National Park. See all the highlights along the coast including granite outcrops, lush forest and keep an eye out for local wildlife.
Included on our Top of the South Island tours.
3. Cathedral Cove, Coromandel Peninsula
The majestic natural rock archway, turquoise waters, golden sands, and towering rock stacks make Cathedral Cove a true icon of the Coromandel coastline.
In the surrounding waters, swimmers, snorkelers, and divers can explore colourful sponge gardens, thriving reef systems, and diverse marine life beneath the surface.
4. Hokitika Beach, West Coast

'Typical beach' doesn't come to mind when describing Hokitika Beach. Considered more untamed, Hokitika Beach on the West Coast is stunning for sunsets & sunrises, starry nights, and slow beach walks - where if you're lucky, you might find a piece of pounamu-jade (greenstone) hidden amongst the black sand.
A trip to Hokitika is included in our Top of the South Island and newly announced Best of the South Island tours.
5. Maitai Bay, Bay of Islands

Tucked away at the top of the North Island, Maitai Bay offers a stunning tranquil escape. Picture beautifully clear water, soft white sand and vineyards only a stone's throw away from the beach.
