Gallipoli: The scale of our war
Te Papa, the National Museum of New Zealand is located on the picturesque Wellington waterfront. This innovative and interactive museum embraces a wide range of exhibits from Maori and European settlement to Whales and the evolution of bugs.
There is one exhibition that stands out from the rest – Gallipoli: The scale of our war. Marking the World War I centenary, Te Papa joined forces with the creative minds of Weta Workshop to create this unique and moving display.
The exhibition follows the stories of 8 New Zealanders and their extraordinary, real-life stories during the 8-month long campaign in Gallipoli where 2,779 kiwis lost their lives.
Using cutting-edge technology, each sculpture is 2.4 times human size and perfectly encapsulates a moment of time. The giant sculptures took 24,000 hours to create and even more researching the history.
Te Papa have released a 6-part video series documenting the building of the Gallipoli exhibit which has to be seen to be believed.
A visit to Te Papa is an included attraction on selected Grand Pacific Tours that visit the North Island.
